While others may not think this way, I sometimes find that filming a wedding can be a relaxing end to a weekend. I started off the last Friday and Saturday in April by driving to Brownwood, Texas and filming eleven consecutive interviews of students at Howard Payne University. It was a long day, and by the time I arrived at my parent’s house in New Braunfels, I was ready to relax a bit. Thankfully, my good friends Ricky and Kim were getting married the next day, and they are my kind of people.

Ricky started off the day getting tacos with his groomsmen, so of course I tagged along to “film” (and eat tacos). The we drove all over New Braunfels trying to find a place to swim in the Comal River. Unfortunately, the city blocks off public access to the river on the weekends so we had to hatch an alternative plan involving the Guadalupe River, a dock, and some inner tubes.

Eventually everyone got around to finishing getting ready for the ceremony, and we all booked it out to Camp Lucy in the Hill Country southwest of Austin. I daresay there aren’t many prettier places to get married in Texas. I’m not one to cry while filming usually, but there was a lot of dust in the air at this ceremony. I wouldn’t even call what I do a job, I love it that much.

One of the fun things about running my own production company is that I get to help friends of mine film weddings.  Brittan Pittman has been shooting weddings for several years now, and he is one of the most talented guys that I know.  When he asked me to help him film Jackie and Garth’s wedding I immediately said yes.

I hadn’t ever been to One World Theater in Austin before.  Set in the hill country to the west of Austin, the theater hosts plays, live music, and weddings.  But enough about the amazing location, let’s talk about this couple.  Garth is a tall military man, and Jackie is his shorter bride.  If I had to describe their wedding in one word, it would be “spiffy.”  Garth and his groomsmen knew how to have fun, but their uniforms made them look cool doing it.  Jackie and her bridesmaids didn’t have uniforms, but their dresses were perfect.

Did I mention they had a live band, photo booth, and cigar roller?  These two know how to have fun and throw a killer party.  My favorite part of the night was when the whitest guy in the band started rapping Hey Ya by Outkast.  I haven’t ever laughed that hard at a wedding before.

I met Dustin while filming a Fightin’ Texas Aggie Football game two years ago.  He was a pretty cool photographer and we bonded over shared excitement of having field passes for football games.  Last year, his fiance Kelli emailed me about filming their wedding in December.  After a few emails back and forth I made the connection of who she was marrying and immediately got even more excited about filming their wedding.

The two of them together make for one of the more goofy and laid back couples that I’ve filmed (which I prefer).  The entire time I filmed Dustin I was laughing at something he did or said to his groomsmen.  Kelli provides a balance to Dustin’s humor while trying to be serious in some moments but totally giving in to his jokes the next.  Their personalities mix perfectly.

Kelli and Dustin were married at The First United Methodist Church, in Temple Texas.  But, I’m getting a bit ahead of myself because they let me film their rehearsal dinner the night before at Peacock River Ranch in Gatesville, Texas.  They really went all out on this rehearsal dinner too – there was dancing, s’mores, amazing food (with queso), and redneck wine glasses.  Their wedding day was amazing as well.  First United Methodist Church is a historic landmark and has some of the best architecture at any wedding I’ve ever seen.  Amazing stained glass with a round auditorium made for a unique ceremony.

It was great meeting these two love birds and getting the chance to tell their story.

Before filming a wedding, I like to watch wedding highlight videos to get myself in the proper mindset.  Each wedding has its own style, a theme, a flair even.  Jenni and Dustin definitely had a style all their own.  When I first was approached by Jenni about filming her wedding and told where it was going to be held, I envisioned a small country wedding out in the trees.  Arriving on wedding day and seeing the beauty of the venue changed my mind considerably.   Having only known Jenni and Dustin a short time, I can still say with a perfect degree of certainty, that their wedding was exactly their style.  A mixture of indie and mainstream, trendy and down to earth all at the same time.

My friend Toan, who I helped film Janie and Blayne’s wedding with, owed me a favor and agreed to help me film this wedding.  Thanks to his help, the video turned out great.

The ceremony and reception both took place at Angel Mountain in the lost pines of Bastrop, Texas on November 6, 2010.

Wedding photography was expertly handled by Lisa at Illuminate Photography.

Music: The song “Real Life” was provided with permission from the band Adelynn.  They have a great sound and are all about glorifying God.  Big thanks to them for letting me use their song, now go listen to their music!
