The Blog

Yosemite – clouds rolled low through the valleys over plants that burst with dark green and orange hues. Waterfalls thundered hundreds of feet into crystal clear pools. Deer and other animals came close to look at us as much as we looked at them.

This wasn’t just a one day wedding, it was a four-day event involving campfires, bagpipes, hiking, pizza parties, an Aggie Football game, and of course some amazing vows said on Sentinel Beach in the heart of the valley. This wasn’t even a dedicated venue site for weddings. People just pull up, park, and get married on a first come, first served basis. I’ve filmed many laid-back weddings before, but this is on a whole new level.

Kristin said it best the first night we all arrived, Yosemite is the best place on earth. I hope to go back and film another wedding there soon.

Filmed by Matt Johnson and Skyler Fike. Special thanks to Jordan Laessig.

It is a big help to me when you use any of the above product links to Adorama, Amazon, and B&H and when you get anything. It costs you nothing, and helps me keep my site running. I have bought from all of these websites and I highly recommend them for their service, quality, and shipping speed.  I recommend them all personally.

Getting married in Yosemite? I would love to film it. Get in touch!

The morning weather was brutal, think sweating through your shirt at 10am humid; but wedding days with couples like this are what I dream about. See, the weather in Beaumont is still Texas weather, and by noon it changed its mind, cooled off, and became lovely for a wedding. Oh, and in case you haven’t watched the film above, these two are ridiculously, head over heels in love which always makes for fun filming. Also, Hannah loves the color pink. Heck, I love the color pink! I love bright wedding colors and couples in love!

Now that the obvious things are out of the way, let me tell you some things about Hannah and Steven that are a little less apparent at first glance. They first met in April 2013, but Hannah made the first move when she added Steven on Facebook in August. Taking the initiative from her forwardness, he invited her to go dancing to which of course she said yes.

Since then, they haven’t gone two days without seeing each other; and one year from their first date they were married at The Church On The Rock in Beaumont, Texas. Sound fast? To some it may seem quick, but if you spend 5 minutes with them it becomes obvious they are the perfect fit for one another.

So Stephen with his hot pink tie, and Hannah with her non-pink dress, found themselves getting hitched by a minister with a passing resemblance to Timothy Dalton; while I found myself filming the nuptials. Did I mention I love filming weddings like this?

I’m going to start this off by saying that the Roberts family is one of the coolest families I’ve ever met. Their children are musicians, pastors, IT experts, and barbers – and that’s just the boys! If you’ve followed my blog, you may have already heard some of their music. Christopher and his brothers Ben and Terrence are in a Christian Rap group called T.I.C. – Troops In Combat and their mixtape is a free download on my blog.

Now that I got my plug for my site out of the way, let’s talk more about family. Oftentimes when I’m filming and editing a wedding I keep my focus on the couple because it’s their day (duh) and they are the most important characters in their story. But with Christopher and Ivy it was different. Christopher’s family is so connected that pretty much any event is a family affair. I remember visiting their church after being invited by Christopher’s brother Terrence. As I came in I met his dad and grandfather, both of whom were ministers at the church, his brothers, sister, various girlfriends and boyfriends, cousins, second cousins, aunts, uncles, pretty much every possible relative that could be there was there. Some churches claim to be a “family”, but this one really was one made up of a couple hundred people that were mostly related in one way or another.

Terrence and I were good friends, and without fail when we would hangout one or all of his brothers would come too. It always made things fun, and I really began feeling like part of the family. This family-minded atmosphere translated so well into their wedding film. Of course every wedding I film has family and friends present to watch the couple be married, but this one was different. Christopher’s dad was the minister, his brothers were the groomsmen, Ivy’s sisters were her bridesmaids, much like at their church all people present were either related or about to be related. Everyone already knew each other so well, and it was incredibly clear that this was a joining of two families, not just two people.

This all made for an intimate wedding film that I believe sums up Christopher and Ivy so well.

From this moment on when I think “Texas Wedding”, I’m also going to be thinking about Laura and Tyler’s day. We started in Brenham at the Christ Lutheran Church, and ended at Harmonie Hall in Shelby. There was a old school country band (think George Strait, not Florida Georgia Line), toolbox wedding cake, and one of the most entertaining caterers I’ve ever met in my life.
This all combined to make a wedding that, in my opinion, embodies the state of Texas. Check it out and I think you’ll agree.

Weddings are the peak emotional moment of many people’s lives; maybe that’s why I enjoy filming them so much. I get to be a part of one of the most joyous moments that anyone will experience nearly every weekend. Everyone’s happy, the excitement is palpable, and you can actually feel a buzz in the air from how incredibly pumped everyone is. Chandler and Chelsea’s wedding took everything to the next level, and it was one of the most emotional weddings I’ve filmed all year.

Weddings are about more than just two people joining together. It really is more like two families with all their funny quirks, awkwardness, and humor, merging together. New relationships begin between uncles, cousins, dads, and grandparents. This wedding was no exception. Chelsea and Chandler have a daughter together named Cailyn, and when I first heard them talk about her I knew she was going to be a big feature of their wedding day. Usually, the weddings I film are all about the bride and groom’s love for one another, but I found this one being about that, and to an even greater extent, their love for their daughter as well.

This love was no more evident than during the ceremony when Chandler shared his vows with Chelsea, she shared hers with Chandler, and then they both shared vows with Cailyn. The love of their families was also incredibly prevalent as their wedding. Chelsea told me that she had never seen her dad cry before, and that was true up until the wedding day. I’m excited and incredibly blessed to have been able to film their wedding.
